Notebooks

Ring-bound and rod-bound notebooks secure their contents by threading perforated pages around straight or curved prongs. Hard-bound notebooks include a sewn spine, and the pages are not easily removed. It is frequently cheaper to purchase notebooks that are spiral-bound, meaning that a spiral of wire is looped through large perforations at the top or side of the page. During the Enlightenment, British schoolchildren were commonly taught how to make their own notebooks out of loose sheets of paper, a process that involved folding, piercing, gathering, sewing and/or binding the sheets. While paper was cheaper than wax, its cost was sufficiently high to ensure the popularity of erasable notebooks, made of specially-treated paper that could be wiped clean and used again.

Because its paper is thin, you might notice more ghosting with this notebook than with the other notebooks in this list. Most of all, the cream-color paper is exquisite, with a powdery, toothy texture unlike that of any of the other notebooks we tested or have used in the past. Three out of five testers ranked this notebook in their top three, saying they loved the pleasant tone of the paper and the notebook’s minimalist aesthetic, which makes writing and journaling as distraction-free as possible. The Premium C.D. Notebook’s super-smooth paper isn’t for everyone, especially those who are expecting a traditional paper feel as you get with typical composition notebooks. The cardstock cover is sturdy, and the stitched binding is high quality, which allows the notebook to lie flat nicely. The notebook’s paper shows off ink colors from fountain and rollerball pens brilliantly.

The nursing home scenes were filmed at Rice Hope Plantation, located in Georgetown County. Many of the scenes set in Seabrook were filmed in the town of Mt. Pleasant, (a suburb of Charleston). Contrary to the suggestion in the film's dialogue, neither the house nor the Seabrook area was home to South Carolina Revolutionary hero Francis Marion, whose plantation was actually located northwest of Charleston. The house was not actually in a dilapidated state at the time and instead was made to look that way by special effects. None of the filming took place in the Seabrook area, however, and instead utilized the surrounding areas. Much of the film's plot takes place in and around Seabrook Island, an actual town which is one of the South Carolina "sea island" localities, located 20 miles (32 km) southwest of Charleston.

The year 1991 saw the first notebooks with color displays, as well as the emergence of subnotebooks, which occupy a size class in between notebooks and palmtop PCs.
